When do I change out my old unit? When considering changing out your old HVAC system, there are some more things to consider than just the equipment itself.
First, in order to assure you have the right size A/C system you need to have a Heat Load Calculation performed. A Heat Load Calculation makes sure that the correct size unit is being installed. Mountain Air and Heating is an HEMC (Habersham) qualified HVAC contractor. We accurately measure the square footage of each room, windows, doors, all exposed walls, floors and ceilings. These figures, along with the R-value of your insulation, are put into a computer program which will tell us exactly what size HVAC unit you will need to properly heat and cool your home. Fifteen to thirty years ago, this was not done. Even today, the State of Georgia does not require Heat Loads, although many other states do. Here at Mountain Air and Heating, we believe in giving our customers the best. We offer Heat Loads on all new and existing jobs, just to make sure we have the right equipment size. If your unit is too big or too small, it won't adequately heat or cool you home and will rob you of energy savings. Some energy companies will provide discounts for using Heat Load Calculations and installing the most energy efficient units in your home. Second, be sure your duct work is in good condition. We offer a free duct inspection and will make recommendations on what can be done to improve the efficiency of your duct system. Your system is only as good as the ductwork which carries the hot or cold air to each room. There is no doubt that if the duct work is as old as the old system you are replacing, then it probably is as inefficient as the system. If your duct work is old, it is probably not up to code and is only half (R-4) as efficient as the new duct. If you are going through the expense of replacing your old system, make sure your duct work is brought up to standards and properly sealed. If not, you won't be receiving all the energy savings you should. Third, did the old system meet all of your
expectations? If not, now is the time to address them. Do you have
hot or cold spots, uneven temperatures, high power bills, dust and
air-born allergens? These are all things that Zone Systems Zoning provides a more comfortable and efficient way to heat and cool your home or office. If you had a 2 story home and tried to heat and cool it with one unit, the upstairs will always be hot and the downstairs will always be cool. A Zone System would allow you to control the temperature upstairs and downstairs independently of one another with one A/C system. How a Zone System Works A Zone System uses a zone board as the master control, controlling each zone damper and the A/C equipment. Each zone has an independent zone damper and thermostat that send a signal to the zone board telling it to heat or cool that particular area. If the thermostat downstairs was set to 70 degrees and it was 70 degrees downstairs, but the upstairs thermostat was also set to 70 degrees and it was actually 72 degrees upstairs, the thermostat would tell the zone board to turn the system on to cooling and open the zone damper for the upstairs. The downstairs damper would remain closed, allowing the A/C system to concentrate on the one area that needs cooling the most. Programmable Thermostats New Thermostats can save up to 18% of cooling cost and up to 29% on heating. We offer several types and brands based on your application.
There are two different types of programmable thermostats. The "5 Day + 2 Day" which is for most residences, allows you to program weekdays (Monday through Friday) and weekends (Saturday and Sunday) differently. The other type is called the "7 Day Independent" thermostat which is used primarily for businesses and churches, which allows you to custom program each day differently. Programmable thermostats help conserve energy because they won't run the heating or cooling equipment when no one is there. A common practice is to set the thermostat to shut down the unit 30 minutes before leaving your home in the morning and turn on 30 minutes prior to your return home. Humidification MOUNTAIN AIR AND HEATING offers humidifiers and dehumidifiers for home and light commercial applications. Additional humidification in the heating season can improve health, lower heating costs, and reduce static electricity. Air Duct Sealing and Repairs All of our new duct systems are sealed above and beyond the current energy code requirements. An old existing HVAC system that was installed 15, 20 or 30 years ago may be suffering from 20-30% air leakage and does not meet the new energy code requirements. The new codes require R-8 value duct in unconditioned crawl space and attics. If you go through the expense of replacing your old A/C system, you need to make sure the old ductwork is brought up to standard as well. If you don't, the new, high-efficiency unit you just installed will not provide you with the energy savings that it should. We also offer financing through Wells Fargo Financial.
